The CRISMA Long-Term Outcomes Core (LTOC) specializes in the assessment of long-term outcomes for clinical trials and other prospective research studies. The Core has extensive expertise collecting data from participants who are enrolled in research studies while hospitalized and then require assessments many months to years after hospital discharge. In particularly, the LTOC specializes in collecting data about long-term physical function, mental function, emotional states, and health care utilization among survivors of critical illness.
LTOC collaborates with investigators during the study design phase to select follow-up instruments, craft informed consent documents, write follow-up protocols, develop strategies for maximizing participant retention, and plan longitudinal data analyses.

PROJECT PLANNING
The LTOC can assist with planning at all stages of the research project, including:
- Developing a detailed, transparent budget
- Assisting in the selection of follow-up instruments
- Developing data-collection protocols
- Developing informed consent language
- Assisting with IRB applications
MULTI-MODAL DATA COLLECTION
Telephone: LTOC conducts telephone interviews to assess post-hospital medical resource use, quality of life, cognitive status, and other long-term outcomes. Using a flexible staffing model, the team is able to contact subjects across multiple time zones and during evenings and weekends.
In-Person: LTOC conducts in-person assessments, including physical function and in-depth cognitive assessments. We also facilitate the collection of laboratory specimens during long-term follow-up.
Mail: For hard-to-reach participants, LTOC will collect data using mailed questionnaires. This mode of data collection is typically reserved for participants who can only be reached in this way.
Online: Using REDCap or Qualtrics, LTOC designs and implements online surveys for data collection. This modality is often combined with others to accommodate participants without internet access or technology skills, and may be used as an alternative to telephone or mail data collection.
Other Modalities: We are always working to stay up to date with new technologies to best reach varying subject cohorts, such as text messages, skype video calls, and social media.
