Health Policy and Management

Four people looking at a computer and talking

The CRISMA Program on Health Policy and Management (HPM) conducts interdisciplinary research, advocacy, and education to guide stakeholders in the organization and financing of critical care services in the US and abroad. We bring together health services researchers, health economists, and organizational scientists throughout Pittsburgh to identify and disseminate novel strategies for optimizing critical care delivery systems and improving patient outcomes..

Recent and Ongoing Research Projects

Organizational Strategies for Improving Evidence-update in Intensive Care
This project, supported by an Outstanding Investigator Award from the NIH, provides broad support for Dr. Kahn's research program focusing on the relationship between ICU organizational behavior and evidence-based treatments in critical care. Specific sub-projects examine studying the interactive behavior of ICU care teams and improving the value of decision support tools in critical care. Funding: NIH/NHLBI R35HL144814 (PI: Kahn)

The Effects of State Sepsis Mandates on Hospital Mortality, Health Care Utilization, and Costs
The goal of this project is to evaluate a novel New York State regulation designed to improve sepsis outcomes by incentivizing adherence to evidence-based sepsis guidelines. Funding: AHRQ R01 HS025146 (PI: Kahn)

Evaluating National Sepsis Policy Using the Electronic Health Record
This project is using EHR data to understand the beneficial effects and unintended adverse consequences of the CMS sepsis-focused public reporting program known as SEP-1. Funding: AHRQ K08 HS025455 (PI: Barbash)
