Mackenzie Martin Received GME Mentor of the Year Award
Mackenzie Martin, GME academic manager in the Department of Critical Care Medicine’s Office of Education, received the 2020 Mentor the Year award given by the UPMC Graduate Medical Education program. The award recognizes Mackenzie’s dedication to supporting the learning and development of newer GME program coordinators. In particular, she fostered the knowledge and professionalism of a recently hired coordinator for the Adult fellowship program and also furthered her mentorship and guidance of the coordinator for the Pediatric Critical Care fellowship program.
The Mentor of the Year award was presented during a small, socially distanced gathering in the CCM Office of Education on July 13, 2020, instead of during the usual GME annual coordinator symposium, which had to be cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Mackenzie has successfully mentored our new fellowship coordinator, Abigail Biery, during a period of transition and short staffing while also keeping four different Adult CCM programs running smoothly,” said Jason Moore, MD, MS, who is program director for the Internal Medicine/Emergency Medicine Critical Care fellowship. “She has led by example, remaining professional, enthusiastic, and a hard-working member of our team.”
As the GME academic manager, Mackenzie is responsible for coordinating the large Multidisciplinary Critical Care Training Program lecture series for fellows; liaising with five program directors to improve the didactic experience via Canvas and Medhub; standardizing and streamlining documentation requirements; managing fellowship recruitment and onboarding; and overseeing the activities of three GME department managers.
The Mentor of the Year award is one of five awards bestowed each out year, including Rookie of the Year, Program Support of the Year, Outstanding Coordinator of the Year, and Ground Breaker of the Year. UPMCs Graduate Medical Education program is the 4th largest in the nation. It coordinates more than 150 residencies and fellowships in 19 UPMC hospitals across Pennsylvania.
