Summary
We will create a patient-level database of prehospital encounters in Southwestern Pennsylvania linked to emergency department (ED) and hospital outcomes. We will use data from Emergency Medical Services (EMS) agencies who receive medical command through the Department of Emergency Medicine and UPMC Prehospital Care and have records stored electronically in emsCharts – a standardized prehospital patient care reporting program. These records will be linked by Honest Brokers to electronic health records at all UPMC facilities. We will link this database to long-term outcomes in the CDC National Death Index and multiple hospital level datasets (e.g. American Hospital Association Survey, HCRIS). This dataset will initially support multiple collaborative projects in the Departments of Emergency Medicine, Critical Care Medicine, Biostatistics, Pediatrics, Industrial Engineering, and Health Policy & Management

We successfully linked more than 55,000 EMS records in SW PA to hospital based records, and are proceeding with analysis.
