Opioid tolerance is major problem in Pediatric Intensive Care Units in the US.  We are analysing used of narcotics and sedatives in critically ill children requiring long term mechanical ventilation.  We found that 30% of long term children develop opioid tolerance.  Strategies to reduce opioid tolerance are being considered. Baseline data has now been collected to inform a definitive trial aimed towards this goal.
