Michael R. Pinsky, MD, representing the American Thoracic Society, along with representatives from the Society of Critical Care Medicine, American College of Chest Physicians, and echocardiography groups from emergency medicine and anesthesiology, met in an historic first meeting with the leadership of the National Board of Echocardiography on August 10, 2015 in Chicago, IL. The result of this meeting was an agreement to proceed with crafting the board requirements and credentialing process of critical care physicians to be certified in advanced point of care echocardiography.
This result is the end point of over 5 years of meetings and position papers agreed upon by the various societies that paved the way for this final process. Follow up meetings are planned in the near future to codify the eligibility criteria and create an appropriate library of examination questions for this certification. No time has been set for the first certification exam, but all agreed that this should be done quickly.
