Dr. Tim Girard will present “Life After Critical Illness: Progress and Challenges” at a 90-minute Super Grand Rounds at noon on Wednesday, December 6 in room BST 100. He will be joined by a former ICU patient, who will tell her story of delirium and psychosis experienced while in hospital. The talks will be followed by a moderated Q&A.
A visiting associate professor who joined the Department of Critical Care Medicine in 2016, Dr. Girard's research interests include cognitive impairment after critical illness, delirium in the ICU, sedation, and liberation from mechanical ventilation. He has conducted a randomized clinical trial evaluating the effect of a paired sedation and ventilator weaning protocol on short- and long-term outcomes among medical ICU patients, and has conducted a multicenter prospective cohort study of long-term cognitive impairment in survivors of critical illness. He is currently funded by the National Institute on Aging.
