Lori Shutter, MD, FNCS, FCCM, is a neuro-intensivist at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, where she was appointed as Visiting Professor, Department of Critical Care Medicine in July, 2012. She holds secondary appointments in the Departments of Neurology and Neurosurgery. She is the Director of the Neurocritical Care Fellowship Program, and Co- Director of the Neurovascular Intensive Care Unit.  She earned her MD from Emory University, completed her Internship at University of Alabama and served her Neurology residency at Emory University. Her Rehabilitation Research fellowship was completed at University of Pennsylvania, and her Critical Care training at Loma Linda University. While in the Department of Neurosurgery at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine from 2003-2012 she established one of the first accredited Neurocritical Care Fellowship Training Programs.

Dr. Shutter’s research focus is the area of traumatic brain injury and advanced monitoring in neurocritical care.  She has over 70 research papers and book chapters to her credit.  She participated in development of the Brain Trauma Foundation’s Guidelines for Management of Severe Traumatic Brain Injury (2007), the Neurocritical Care Society’s Guidelines on Medical Management of Subarachnoid Hemorrhage (2011) and Management of Status Epilepticus (2012).  In recognition of her clinical practice, she was a 2008 recipient of the Leonard Tow Humanism in Medicine Award, presented by the Arnold P. Gold Foundation. The award, granted to one faculty member and one graduating medical student at nearly 80 medical schools throughout the United States, recognizes the value of humanism in the delivery of care to patients and their families.
