I was born and raised in Newport News, Virginia, the last of three boys. After graduating from high school, I attended Harvard University, where I graduated magna cum laude with a degree in Biochemical Sciences. I then attended the Duke University School of Medicine, with a brief stint at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center as a Doris Duke clinical research fellow. I completed an internship and residency in Internal Medicine at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, MA and then a series of three fellowships in Hospital Medicine, Nephrology, and Critical Care at the University of California San Francisco Medical Center.

When I am not in the hospital, I enjoy bodybuilding and powerlifting; international and domestic travel; trying new cuisines and dishes, particularly desserts; photography; and attending the symphony and opera as much as possible.
